Greenwood Utilities - Your Public Utility Company

About Us

Greenwood Utilities is a water and electric municipal utility which has been owned by and located in the city of Greenwood, Mississippi since 1904. We are governed by a board of three commissioners, whom are appointed by the Greenwood Mayor and approved by the City Council. The commissioners are a policy making board that serves 3-year staggered terms. All operating decisions are made by our General Manager. Greenwood Utilities has approximately 100 employees, operating our main office and two generating stations as well as maintaining our water and electric distribution systems.

Where do we get our water?

Greenwood Utilities pumps its water from the Meridian Upper Wilcox Aquifer located 600 - 800 feet below ground level. There are various wells throughout the city that pump into the storage tanks and distribution mains which disperse water to the consumers. We chlorinate water at each well site before being released into the system. Greenwood Utilities customers consume an average of 3.6 million gallons of water every day.

Where do we get our power?

From 1904 until 1977, Greenwood Utilities generated all the electric power utilized by our customers. As the demand for power increased, it became prudent for Greenwood Utilities to establish an interconnection program to provide an alternate source of electricity in the event of a catastrophic failure of our generation capacity or a natural disaster.

Since 1977, three interconnection projects have been completed which together help ensure that our customers will have the most reliable electric power possible. Our local generation capacity for power is approximately 74 Megawatts. We have the ability to burn multiple fuels for generation, including coal, natural gas, and diesel. In addition to our generation capacity, we have interconnections between Entergy Mississippi and our Henderson, Wright, and South Substations to give us a combined transformer capacity of approximately 121 Megawatts. The all-time peak demand on our system occurred on July 19, 2000 when the load reached 79.4 Megawatts.
